The skill and experience of the West Whitted Roofing team allows us to be able to work on roofs of all kinds of materials. We’d also be more than happy to help you determine which material would be best for your purposes. Let’s discuss the pros and cons of each.

SHINGLE ROOFS

Asphalt shingle roofs are popular due to their flexibility and affordability. They are one of the most affordable choices when it comes to roofing material, and fits many styles of home decor. Asphalt shingles are also easy to install and replace.

However, asphalt shingles are also prone to being uplifted by the wind and cracking. They won’t give your home a look that stands out if that’s what you’re after. They also won’t last as long as some other roofing materials do. Finally, it’s not recommended to install asphalt shingles during the winter, as they can be damaged.

METAL ROOFS

The key benefit of metal roofing is longevity. Whereas asphalt shingle roofs typically need to be replaced every 15 to 20 years, the lifespan of metal roofs is generally about 40 to 80 years. So, you’re getting more for your money. Metal roofs are also very durable and can withstand ice storms during the winter and searingly hot temperatures during the summer. Most metal roofs are also resistant to hail that’s as large as 2 inches in diameter. Finally, metal roofs are energy-efficient and completely recyclable once their lifespan is over.

But keep in mind that metal roofs are more expensive to purchase than asphalt shingle roofs are, and some people do not like the noise metal roofs create during rainfall. Some types of metal are also prone to rust.

TILE ROOFS

Sometimes, tile roofs can last for as long as 100 years in the right environment. They can also withstand hail, fire, and heavy winds. They won’t decay like wood roofs do. Tile roofs are made using natural materials, so they can be recycled after use. Tile roofs are also available in a variety of colors and styles to perfectly match the rest of your home and preferences.

Tile roofs are also more expensive upfront than asphalt shingle roofs are. We must also make sure that the foundation of your home can withstand the weight of a tile roof, as they are much heavier than asphalt shingles and metal. And although they won’t decay, tile roofs can still be damaged by heavy impact and require repair.

TPO & FLAT ROOFS

TPO, or thermoplastic polyolefin, roofing is a single-ply membrane flat roof you typically see over a commercial or industrial property. TPO roofs are extremely energy-efficient, as they absorb the sun’s UV rays very well. They are also much less prone to mold growth and dirt than EPDM rubber roofing. They are resistant to impacts and punctures. Since it comes in large rolls, TPO roofing is a snap to install and available in many colors.

While TPO roofing is resistant to leaks, it isn’t impervious to them. Therefore, it may need repair for leaks following a period of time. Although it’s relatively simple to install, it isn’t a DIY project and should be done by a professional roofing contractor like West Whitted Roofing. Finally, please be advised that ice takes longer to melt on a TPO, so you’ll need to take the proper precautions.
